Artificial Vision: A reality in Barraquer
CENTER OF OPHTHALMOLOGY BARRAQUER start to be a pioneer in our country placing "chips" in the retina, specifically by macular implants, blind or have low vision patients, facilitating that is popularly known as VISION.
Dr. JERONI NADAL, coordinator of the Unit Vitreous-Retina Barraquer, has been chosen by the company Second Sight (USA), designer of the implant ARGUS II, for development in Spain. Barraquer, as a center of excellence, start placing these implants in patients with low vision affects Retinitis Pigmentosa. This disease is the most common cause of inherited retinal degeneration. Its origin is altered genes, causing degeneration and apoptosis (cell death) of the photoreceptors (retinal cells) of the rods (responsible for vision in the peripheral field) and in the final phases cones (central vision), causing blindness.
